Press Release-Chorley & District Trade Union Council

submitted by Steve Turner 18/02/2006

Privatisation, Privatisation, Privatisation, this should have been the mantra of Tony Blair and New Labour before they came to power in 1997. Both nationally and locally Labour politicians can't wait to sell societies assets.

Take Chorley Borough Council, they are Privatising the Golf Course, the Market and Council Housing in fact by the time they have finished there will be nothing left for Councillors to make a decision on. Then there is the Hospital who are Privatising the Sterilisation and Decontamination Unit and every school will have the potential to be handed over to big business, then Politicians wonder why voting turn out is down!

If you are a taxpayer, service user or worker in Public Services, it feels like Heads they win, Tails we loose, there seems to be no discussion or one-sided consultation around the real issues. For example the Privatisation of Council Housing will mean rent and services charge increases without a better service
and no real expansion programme to build more homes. Money wasted on bribes to tempt tenants to transfer their homes to a private firm by the way of show homes, glossy magazines, expensive consultants and the opening of a town centre shop. Money, which would have been better spent to invest in
council housing. Reports in the national press (Daily Mirror 17/02/06 page 9 - Homes sell off Uturn) say that government are planning to stop this privatisation by stealth, we therefore call on the council to immediately suspend this transfer to protect our tenants.

Privatisation of the Hospitals Sterilisation Unit means Hospitals may not get essential and properly clean equipment at the right place at the right time.

Staff who are privatised are told not to worry because they are protected under TUPE legislation only to find that their terms and conditions in all areas of employment are not protected especially when the new company is suddenly taken over by another one. New workers joining don't get the same benefits and in the long run all terms and conditions can be eroded.

So when thinking of voting this May, think to yourself which Party will look after our services, workers and get value for money and you will be hard pressed to make a decision. In fact I would go as far as to say New Labour should both locally and nationally just call itself New Thatcherism. Is it any wonder people don't vote!
